Trench Reinstatement Launceston

Trench Reinstatement work in progress in Launceston Tasmania

When telco, water, gas or NBN contractors cut a trench through your driveway, footpath or road, the reinstatement is supposed to be flush, compacted, and last as long as the surrounding surface. Most aren't.

We do trench reinstatement work for utilities contractors, councils, and private property owners across Launceston and Northern Tas. The brief is always the same: tip-proof flush finish, properly compacted, blends with the surrounding surface within 12 months.

Our reinstatements get inspected and signed off. We carry the right certification for council and utility reinstatement specs.

Why it matters

  • Compliant with City of Launceston + TasNetworks/Tasrail spec
  • Flush finish, no tripping hazard, no bike wheel catchment
  • Proper compaction means no sinking patch in 12 months
  • Quick turnaround, most reinstatements done within 48 hours of trench backfill

THE PROCESS

How we do it

01

Coordinate with trench contractor

Confirm trench is backfilled and compacted to subgrade level before we arrive.

02

Saw-cut clean edges

Square the trench edges with a concrete saw for clean asphalt-to-asphalt joints.

03

Tack coat the edges

Apply emulsion to the vertical edges to bond new asphalt to existing.

04

Lay hot mix in lifts

For deep reinstatements: lay in 50–75mm lifts with compaction between.

05

Compact + screed flush

Vibratory plate or roller compaction. Final screed to ensure dead flush with surrounding surface.

06

Sign off + photograph

Photographic record + sign-off documentation for the utility contractor or council.

AFTERCARE

After the trench is reinstated

A properly reinstated trench should perform identically to the surrounding pavement. A few things to keep an eye on in the first 12 months.

First 30 days

Watch for settlement at the joint between new asphalt and old. Up to 5mm of dip is normal and self-corrects. More than that and we'll top it up under warranty.

First 6 months

The new asphalt will be noticeably darker than the surrounding old surface. It weathers in over 6-12 months. If it bothers you visually, we can apply a thin overlay that ties the colour together.

Watch for edge cracking

If a crack forms along the joint between new and old, water is getting in. Call us and we'll seal it before the trench fails again. Costs a tenth of doing the reinstatement twice.

Council inspection record

We provide photos of the sub-base condition before the asphalt goes down. Keep that file — utility companies sometimes ask for evidence of compliant reinstatement in audits.

FAQ

Trench Reinstatement, common questions

How quickly can you reinstate a trench?+

Standard: within 48 hours of trench backfill being ready. Emergency: same day where possible (extra fee). We work with multiple plant suppliers across Northern Tas so hot mix availability is rarely the bottleneck.

Will the trench reinstatement be visible?+

Yes initially, new asphalt is darker than weathered old asphalt. Within 6–12 months of sun exposure it weathers in to roughly match. A skim coat over the whole area hides it completely if needed.

Do you do gravel road or footpath trench reinstatement?+

Footpath: yes, concrete or asphalt finish to match existing. Gravel road: no, that's a different trade.

Can you reinstate before the road authority inspection?+

Yes, most jobs are reinstated then inspected. Council requires photos of pre-asphalt sub-base condition, which we provide.

What's the warranty on a trench reinstatement?+

We back every reinstatement with our workmanship guarantee, no sinking, no edge failure. Surface weathering match is harder to warranty since it depends on UV exposure.
