Asphalt Driveways Launceston

Asphalt Driveways work in progress in Launceston Tasmania

An asphalt driveway is the most cost-effective way to surface a new driveway in Launceston. Less than half the price of concrete, faster to lay, and forgiving on the cool-temperate Tassie ground.

Most residential driveways we pour are done in a single day, base prep in the morning, hot mix delivered around lunch, rolled and finished by knock-off. You drive on it the next day.

What separates a good asphalt driveway from a bad one is the base. We strip the topsoil properly, compact a road-base sub-base to spec, set the falls for drainage, and only then call for the hot mix. Skip any of that and you'll have ruts within 18 months.

Why it matters

  • Cheaper than concrete, typically 40–60% less per square metre installed
  • Quicker, most jobs done in a day, drivable the next
  • Easier to repair, patches blend in better than concrete patches do
  • Better in cold weather, flexible surface handles Tassie freeze-thaw cycles
  • Quieter, softer surface than concrete or pavers

THE PROCESS

How we do it

01

Site visit + written quote

We come and measure, check sub-base condition, work out access, give you a fixed price in writing within 48 hours.

02

Strip + sub-base prep

Strip topsoil, lay and compact 100–150mm of road-base, grade falls toward the street.

03

Edge formwork (where needed)

Timber edge forms if the driveway abuts a garden or grass strip. Concrete kerbs left as-is.

04

Hot-mix delivery + lay

Asphalt arrives from the local plant at ~140°C. Laid by hand-screed or small paver, depending on access.

05

Compaction + finishing

Roller passes to compact while still hot. Edges rolled tight. Final clean-up.

06

Cool + handover

Cool to walk on within a few hours, drive on after 24–48 hours. Heavy vehicles after 7 days.

AFTERCARE

Looking after your new driveway

Asphalt is a working surface, not a finish. Treat it sensibly in the first month and it'll last 25 years.

First 24-48 hours

Walk on it after a few hours. Light cars after 24-48 hours. No heavy vehicles (boat trailers, caravans, removalist trucks) for 7 days while it cures fully.

First summer

Don't leave a hot car parked in the same spot for hours on hot days. Fresh asphalt softens in the sun until it's properly aged. Move parking spots around for the first 6 months.

Oil and fuel spills

Wipe up immediately. Petrol, diesel and oil dissolve the bitumen binder. A puddle left overnight will leave a soft patch that lasts forever.

Year 2-3 seal coat

An optional bitumen top-up at year 2-3 deepens the black finish and seals micro-cracks before they start. Adds about 5 years to the surface life. We do this for about $4-8 per m².

Year 7-10 re-seal

By year 7-10 a re-seal is worth doing. We strip any loose top, clean, and re-coat. Cheaper than a full re-pour and resets the lifespan clock.

FAQ

Asphalt Driveways, common questions

Can I lay asphalt over an existing concrete driveway?+

Sometimes, depends on the slab condition. If the concrete is structurally sound with no major cracks, we can overlay 40–50mm of asphalt on top. If the concrete is failing, demolition + re-pour is the right call.

How long until the asphalt sets?+

Walk on it within 4–6 hours. Light vehicles after 24–48 hours. Heavy vehicles (boats, caravans, dual-cab utes loaded) wait 7 days minimum.

Will it crack like concrete?+

Less likely, asphalt is a flexible surface that handles ground movement better than concrete. You can get hairline cracks from extreme freeze-thaw cycles, but these are easy to seal and don't compromise the driveway.

How long does it last?+

Properly laid asphalt driveway in Launceston: 20–25 years. The surface seal coat is good for 7–10 years before a re-seal. Re-seal extends the life another decade easily.

Can you do a sealed black-top finish?+

Yes, we apply a top-up bitumen seal at year 2 (after the initial weathering) for the deepest black finish and best long-term protection. Adds $4–$8/m².
