Driveway Excavation Launceston

New driveway construction starts with excavation, strip the topsoil, set the levels, dig out any unstable material, and prepare the site for base prep and the surface lay.
We do driveway excavation as a stand-alone service for builders and owner-builders, or as part of our full driveway construction package.
Right-sized for residential and small commercial, mini-excavator and skid-steer kit, low ground pressure, suitable for tight Launceston suburban blocks.
Why it matters
- Proper levels set means correct surface falls for drainage
- Topsoil and organic material removal prevents future settlement
- Identifies sub-grade issues before pouring (saves expensive rework)
- Coordinated with utility location to avoid expensive damage
THE PROCESS
How we do it
Survey + Dial Before You Dig
Mark out the driveway footprint, do DBYD to clear underground services.
Strip topsoil
Remove topsoil and organic matter to firm subgrade. Stockpile usable soil for backfill or garden use.
Excavate to depth
Dig down 150–250mm depending on intended surface and base thickness.
Remove unstable material
Any soft, wet or organic-rich material removed and replaced with road-base.
Set levels + falls
Laser level used to set correct falls toward the street (1:60 to 1:80 typical).
Compact subgrade
Compact the exposed subgrade as a platform for the road-base layer to follow.
COMPARISON
How it stacks up
Excavation method affects cost, mess and site access. The right one depends on the site, soil and what's above the dig.
| Feature | Hand-dig | Skid-steer loader | Mini-excavator (1.5-3t) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per m³ removed | Highest | Mid | Lowest |
| Speed | Slowest | Fast | Fastest |
| Site access required | Anywhere | Through 1.2m gate | Through 1.5m gate |
| Best for | Confined access, near services | Open suburban driveway | Larger residential, commercial |
| Disruption to existing garden | Minimal | Some | Moderate |
| Spoil handling | Wheelbarrow to truck | Direct to truck | Direct to truck |
| Depth capability | 1m practical max | 1.5m comfortable | 2.5m+ if needed |
AFTERCARE
What you should expect us to leave behind
Excavation is the dirtiest stage of a driveway job. What we leave the site looking like is part of doing the job properly.
Spoil disposal
All excavated material removed from site by us. Clay subgrade goes to landfill (or to a nearby site if reuse-grade), topsoil saved separately if you want it for gardens.
Sub-grade level and proofed
The base of the dig is left smooth, level to falls, and 'proof-rolled' (rolled with a loaded truck to expose any soft spots) before we leave. Soft spots get dug out and replaced.
Service lines protected
Any underground services exposed during the dig (water, gas, telco, stormwater) are wrapped or barricaded so the asphalt crew doesn't hit them on the next visit.
Edges marked
We leave timber pegs or paint marks showing the final driveway footprint and edge falls, so you can sanity-check before we come back to lay.
Tidy site
All loose dirt off your lawn, footpath swept, no muddy tracks on the road. Tasmania has rules about depositing dirt on public roads and we don't want either of us to wear that fine.

FAQ
Driveway Excavation, common questions
How deep do you excavate for a new driveway?+
Residential asphalt: 150–200mm total depth (100mm road-base + 50mm asphalt). Residential concrete: 200–250mm (150mm road-base + 100mm concrete). Heavier vehicle access: deeper still.
What happens to the excavated soil?+
Topsoil is usually retained on-site for the homeowner (garden use). Subsoil and unstable material is removed and disposed of. We quote disposal cost separately so you know exactly what's included.
Can I have the excavation done now and the asphalt done later?+
Yes, common for builders. Once excavation is done we'll set the levels with marker pegs so any contractor can match. Best to lay asphalt within 4–6 weeks of excavation to avoid weather damage to the prepared subgrade.
Will excavation damage my garden?+
We use ground protection mats where access requires crossing lawn or garden beds. Tight-access work uses smaller equipment. We discuss the access plan during the site visit.
Do you do excavation for retaining walls too?+
Yes, though for full retaining wall builds we usually sub-contract a stone/block specialist. We do the excavation, they do the wall, we come back for the driveway.
